An
acolyte is one who has been trained on how to carry
“the light of Christ” (usually a lighted candle)
into the Sanctuary at the beginning of a worship
service and carries “the light of Christ” out of the
Sanctuary preceding the minister, at the close of
the service. There are usually 2 acolytes who
participate in the worship service. On special
occasions the senior acolyte waves banners,
streamers, doves or butterflies. Acolytes also
participate in the offering by placing the
collection plates on the alter table. Being an
acolyte is a wonderful opportunity for young people
to be an active member of the church through serving
others. They learn organizational skills,
confidence, commitment and how to become leaders.
They also enjoy the fellowship that comes with the
life enriching skills they learn while being an
acolyte. What a joyous way to serve Christ!
In
2007, CLUMC youth acolytes made a trip to
Washington, D.C. They joined other acolytes from all
over the nation in an impressive processional at the
National Cathedral which included receiving the
bishop’s blessings, taking communion and touring the
cathedral as well as enjoying a picnic on the
grounds and overnight accommodations. Funds for the
trip were raised by the acolytes though car washes,
B-B-Q’s, silent auctions, a dinner theater night,
odd jobs and donations. The acolytes are now raising
funds for their next trip to Washington, D.C. The
acolytes enjoy a Christmas gathering, swim parties,
confirmation celebrations and participating in the
annual CROP walk.
