John Wesley, the
founder of the Methodist movement, had his own conversion experience
at a prayer meeting on Aldersgate Street in London on May 24, 1738.
He recorded in his journal that he reluctantly attended the
meeting. During the reading of the preface to Luther’s Commentary
on Romans, he wrote: “…I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I
did trust in Christ, Christ alone for my salvation: And an assurance
was given me, that he had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved
me from the law of sin and death.”
Wesley found God in
a way he had previously not experienced. While it was a profound
experience for him, it was significant in that it changed the way he
lived in and through the Church. Wesley and the early Methodists
devoted themselves to inviting people to experience God’s grace in
this same way, and to grow in their knowledge and love of God
through the spiritual disciplines of a Christ-like life. Early
Methodists placed primary emphasis on these disciplines, and taught
how to put faith and love into action. We are, as a result, directly
related to Wesley and these early Methodists in our unique “DNA.”
It is who we are, and what we do! Our rich theological heritage is
exciting, and informs who we are today. We believe that through
Christ, and the learning and practicing of these spiritual
disciplines, lives are transformed, and the Kingdom grows!
